Who am I?

Who am I? Prep for Role Cards

 Who am I?

Master and apprentice model.

Initially these mimes are demonstrated by the adult in the room. S/he will need to prepare children by saying “We going to play a game. I will be someone else for a moment and see if you can guess who I am” Im not Ms Smith now, I am ….who can guess?” (As teacher takes up still position of a Doctor for example.” Well done, James! How did you know- what did you see that showed you I was a Doctor. Do you think we could all do that?”

Then Teacher watches as pupils copy her/him. When she thinks pupils are ready she hands out cards or puts a title on the board (e.g. Nurse) and asks the children all to be the Nurse. Try this a few time before allowing pairs to work together, depending on ability and age. Then   they are executed solo to a partner whose role is to guess who they are. If they guess right, ask them to share what it was that helped them to read the character correctly.  This will be visual as there is no speech involved in mime.  Teacher can assess by asking what was hard and what easy about that mime.

Purpose –To establish the fact that roles are “not me”.

At this age Pupils identify with types and what they see. Depth of character will come later. For now it is the form and behaviour of the person which defines their role in the eyes of children.
